European supplement brand (NL/DE/UK)

Scaling a subscription brand: custom portal, Functions & 670-section theme

Long-running development for a fast-growing subscription supplement brand across three markets: a custom subscription portal replacing Recharge's default, Shopify Functions for discount logic, a checkout UI extension and a huge multi-market theme system tuned for paid traffic.

The challenge

Recharge's standard customer portal didn't match the brand or the flows the team wanted (skip, swap, reschedule in one screen). Discount logic exceeded what discount apps could express. And with aggressive paid acquisition, the theme needed endless landing page variants without becoming unmaintainable.

What I built

  • Headless subscription portal (React) rendered inside the theme via a theme app extension, talking to Recharge through an app proxy: subscriptions, order history, credit and account management on-brand
  • Shopify Functions volume discount implemented twice (JavaScript and Rust→WASM), configured via metafields
  • Checkout UI extension for checkout-level content
  • Multi-market theme system (NL/DE/UK forks) with a bundle engine, gift-unlock ladder, cart upsells and a library of advertorial/landing templates for A/B testing

Result

  • Subscription self-service that matches the brand: fewer support tickets, more retained subscribers
  • Discount logic that no app could deliver, running natively in checkout
  • Marketing ships new landing variants from the theme editor without developer time
